Bihar Still Battling Floods as Roads Are Waterlogged, Due to Heavy Rain

Several areas in Patna are flooded due to heavy rainfall. People living in low lands are affected the most.

The incessant monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in many areas of Bihar. Death toll mounting 29, the state is struggling to get back to normal. Our Community Correspondent, Manoj Kumar, made a video from Baghpur village, which is fully submerged in water.

“Our difficulty is we are drowning here. Our small kids are getting drowned in their sleep at night. Everything is getting destroyed”, said Mohammed Shabbir, clad just in a gamcha, and standing in front of his house, where water is knee-high.

India received the highest rainfall ever recorded in the last 25 years. Last month, in September, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in for heavy rain. Bihar is also a flood-prone state, witnessed Ganga and other rivers surging up, after the torrential rainfall. While the government asked for the food packets and medicines to be airdropped, for this village, there were de-watering machines that were installed, to combat the excess water flooding the roads.

Provision of setting up temporary relief camps was done, however, in front of the horrific catastrophe, these measures were not enough. “I can’t walk properly, it would be better if I could get a trolley. The authorities aren't providing us much relief”, added Nabi Hassan, a resident of Baghpur village.
